New York City, NY August 23, 2004 -- The Cringe - SCRATCH THE SURFACE (Listen Records.

Listen to the energy and the passion bursting out of the speakers on "Another Day," as the pulsing guitars, the intricate harmonies, and the powerful drumming all play off each other, and you'll get it right away; you'll understand from that very first track that The Cringe is ready to break out of the clubs of New York and move on to something much bigger. Combining alternative, underground rock with solid musical craftsmanship, vocalist/guitarist John Cusimano and the rest of the band have made SCRATCH THE SURFACE a truly enjoyable jolt out of the blue.

Cusimano, along with Rob Levin (lead guitar), Matt Powers (bass), and Shawn Pelton (drums), has crafted thirteen powerful songs that take all of his varied influences (early U2, Television, The Beatles, to name just three) to make something original and exciting. Fleshed out by the group, these songs have captured the band's live dynamics in the studio, and the rich, crisp sounds crackle with power, and will jump right up the listener's spine!

One of the things that will strike listeners is the sheer joy pumping through the thirteen songs contained on this collection, as well as the consistently high quality of the material. Songs like "Too Many Problems" are filled with a grungy, melodic magic, while other songs like "I Don't Know" have a punk infused energy, full of crunching guitar power chords slashing off one another.

The Cringe shows their versatility by showcasing songs like the gorgeous "Empty Table," featuring jangly guitar lines, a winding melody, and a unstoppable momentum that leads into a passionate, anthemic chorus. The short instrumental burst of "Song 13" is full of ringing guitar chords and a melodic tension that leads right into the heavy "On and On," a straight on driving rocker built around a thumping bass line, crunching guitars, and Cusimano's cries of "Can't you see, I don't want apologies/ Why won't you just follow me, give me a chance again."

The Cringe is comprised of some of New York City's finest musicians--people who have soaked up different sounds and genres, and have now come together for the sheer joy of playing music with each other. Partially recorded at the famed Electric Lady Land studios (in Jimi Hendrix's old bedroom) and produced by Cusimano, SCRATCH THE SURFACE is bound to catapult this up and coming band out of NYC, and into stereos everywhere!

The Cringe is the kind of band that will not be playing the small clubs for much longer – see them now . . . or you've blown it!

The Cringe -- will be giving away a FREE IPOD (pre loaded with their acclaimed debut LP "Scratch the Surface") to one lucky winner at their next live NYC show at 7:30pm on Monday, August 30th at Luna Lounge, 171 Ludlow Street. Just come to the show to qualify to win!
